How many times do you visit these platforms? We don’t have a count, Right.
We all know someone who is addicted to social media or we might be the one. Social media has made its own space in the lives of people. With the emergence of social media it has become really easy to catch up on events happening, not only across our state, country but also around the world. It has enabled people to discover and learn new information, share ideas, interact with new people and organizations. It has changed the way people live their lives today.
Not only has social media evolved from cyber world geek chatter to a large platform for businesses, entrepreneurs, professionals, and organizations seeking more exposure and identity at a low cost, social media has developed. We all have gradually realized its importance. And to your surprise, there is a day called World Social Media Day.
The Father of Social Media:
Mashable launched World Social Media Day on June 30, 2010. It began as a means to highlight the influence of social media on global communication and to bring people from all over the world together to celebrate it. Every day, everyone utilizes social media; it’s how we communicate with people all over the globe easily and quickly. Mashable is recognized for connecting diverse cultures, movements, and fandoms through social media, which is why they wanted a day to commemorate it. Every year, people utilize the hashtag #SMDay, and this year is your chance to join in! Now let’s dive into the flashy timeline of social media, which has not only sustained the power of time but has improved over the years.
The First Mover in the Market:
Six degrees was the first social networking site to be created in 1997. The website, which was started by Andrew Weinreich, enabled users to list friends and family members and included features including profiles, bulletin boards, and school affiliations. Six degrees had nearly a million subscribers at its height, however, it was shut down in 2001.
Journey of Social Media Platforms:
Friendster was the first contemporary social media network, launched in 2002. The website allows individuals to establish new acquaintances in a secure environment and has over a hundred million members, most of whom are from Asia. In 2003, LinkedIn became the first business-focused social networking platform. MySpace debuted in 2004, the same year as Facebook, although it was far more successful at first than Mark Zuckerberg’s brainchild.
The Penetrator:
By 2006, MySpace had become the world’s most popular social networking platform, with users adoring the customizable profiles that also allowed them to share their music. In 2005, YouTube debuted its video-focused website, and Twitter followed in 2006 with its limited-character platform. As both increased in popularity, so did Facebook, and for the following five years, the most popular social media sites were Facebook and Twitter.
Hence we can conclude that social media has not only grown but has also evolved, and dominated our virtual world. So using it judiciously would be the smartest choice. On this World Social Media Day, let’s pledge to use social media wisely and judiciously.
